Clevearc’s philosophy of care is underpinned by the principles of person centred care and therefore acknowledges that a person with dementia is a unique individual with needs and rights in common with fellow human beings. We aim to provide fulfilment and a sense of well being.
We recognise families and friends as an integral part of the lives of our Clients (Resident/Day Centre Attendee) and of Cleveland Alzheimers and our philosophy of care therefore extends to them. We endeavour to maintain close relationships with families and friends and provide support, information and advice. They are encouraged and enabled to a take full and active part, if they wish, in the continuing care of their relative/friend.
The principles by which we plan and provide care are as follows:
Clients are encouraged and enabled to have full access to and participate in the life of the local community, both within and beyond the Day Centre.
The right of all clients to be alone or undisturbed is respected. Each client will be assisted to maintain maximum privacy within the boundaries of legislation and the establishment and taking into account their ability to maintain personal safety.
Clients can expect that their emotional, cultural, spiritual, physical, psychological and sexuality are accepted and respected. Each client will be treated as an adult whatever their circumstances may be.
Each client is valued as an individual regardless of his/her incapacity, with respect shown for their uniqueness and personal needs.
Clients are encouraged and enabled to make choices in all aspects of the service provided/offered.
The Uniqueness of Persons
Each person has come to be who they are by a route that is uniquely their own, every stage of the journey has left its mark. This leads each person to be an individual, to be unique. The recognition of this generates sensitivity to areas of need and actions needed to give care a clearer direction.
No discrimination on the grounds of age, sex, religion, culture, marital status, nationality or disability to the quality of service offered exists. Awareness raising concerns with dementia and its effects among minority groups is actively promoted.
The following mechanisms are used to ensure achievement of these principles.
Staffing levels are maintained at least to meet the risks and needs of the clients. Staff employed are selected for their empathy, commitment, respect and non judgemental attitude.
Training and development of staff is viewed as integral to the provision of high quality services. Commitment to staff training and development that is progressive and supportive therefore exists.
The physical and social environments within Cleveland Alzheimers are homely, relaxed and comfortable. They provide sufficient and appropriate stimulation, human contact and emotional security to extract maximum therapeutic effect.
Staff will act as the client’s advocate with external agencies in the absence of appropriate relative or friend.
We also recognise the right of the clients to have access to an independent advocacy service and will actively pursue such a facility.
Quality and Monitoring
In an attempt to achieve to highest quality of care, monitoring of standards across Cleveland Alzheimers is continual.
Although we recognise that lack of knowledge/skills can lead to a reduction in quality, training is continual and needs led and linked to a clinical supervision and appraisal system and therefore available to all staff.
Suggestions for improvement from clients, visitors and staff are actively encouraged and implemented where appropriate.
A formal complaint procedure is available for all staff and visitors. We also encourage clients and relatives to raise comments or dissatisfaction informally at any time
Staff are encouraged to actively listen to clients and observe verbal clues which may indicate dissatisfaction and report it to the Care Home Manager/ Day Centre Organiser for action.
